Lake Norman was created as a part of the Cowans Ford Dam between 1959 and 1964. Today, it is still the largest human-made freshwater lake in North Carolina. It is fed by the Catawba River, draining into Mountain Island Lake. Being that the lake and dam were both projects of Duke Power, the lake was named after the companies former president, Norman Atwater Cocke. Residents of North Carolina call Lake Norman the “inland sea” because of its size; it has more than fifty square miles of surface water, is roughly thirty-three miles long, nine miles wide, thirty-three feet in depth at its deepest point, and features 520 square miles of tranquil shoreline. Lake Norman powers three facilities: the generators at the Cowans Ford Dam hydroelectric station, the Marshall Steam Station, and the McGuire Nuclear Station. The lake is also a major water supplier to Charlotte, Mooresville, Iredell County, Catawba County, Lincoln County, Mecklenburg County, and the towns of Huntersville, Davidson, and Cornelius.
Residents of the lake enjoy being approximately thirty-four miles from Charlotte via I-77 south.
